Akyaka is situated in the province of Muğla, in the southwest of Turkey, between Marmaris, Muğla and Bodrum. The number of inhabitants amounts in the winter to approximately 1500, in the summer it almost doubles. It is a small town at the end of the Gökova bay, bordered in the north by 1000 m high Sakartepe, in the south by the wetlands of the Gökova plain . Being a settlement even in antique times, the village of Akyaka lead an existence as a fishing village, off the roads, with a little of agriculture.
One of the main characteristics of Akyaka is its Ottoman architecture. Akyaka streets are an irresistible attraction of beautifully restored houses with fantastic woodwork and colorful bougainvillea, surrounded by pine forests and a great mountain backdrop.
Azmak river runs along the edge of town separating the town from the marshland beyond. The river fed from springs is unbelievably crystal clear, deep and quite fast flowing. Small boats operate in the river passing all the restaurants with the gum tree lined fronts and out into the calm waters of the gulf. The beach is packed with bars, restaurants and small hotels. Unlike a lot of tourist towns, Akyaka is not overrun by big resorts. So, it has its nice feel.
