mESC-IS 24

The 8th International Symposium on Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion ,mESC-IS 24 has taken place ın Baku, Azerbaijan from 7th to 10th October 2024 . Three circulars were distributed starting from January to June 2024 and submissions were invited in four major activity areas, i) batteries and supercapacitors, ii) fuel/electrolytic cells, and iii) hydrogen for energy storage and transport.

The areas for which submissions were invited are listed below

Batteries & Supercapacitors

  • Li-ion & Na-ion batteries
  • Multivalent ion batteries
  • All solid state batteries
  • Batteries for grid energy storage
  • Aqueous batteries
  • Capacitive energy storage systems
  • Battery recycling and active material development

Fuel / Electrolytic Cells

  • Electrolysers (Alkaline, PEM, SOEC)
  • Enhancing the performance of PEM fuel cells
  • Low and intermediate temperature SOFCs
  • Direct liquid fuel cells
  • Reversible fuel cells
  • Novel processing in cell & stack materials

Hydrogen for Energy Storage & Transport

  • Hydrogen production via water splitting
  • Novel materials for solid-state hydrogen storage
  • Dense membranes for hydrogen separation
  • Hydrogen compression utilizing metal hydrides
  • Electrochemical hydrogen separation and compression
  • Materials for hydrogen transport.

On the first day the symposium took place at Badamdar Hotel with an opening session. There were impressive participation from the research community of Baku as well as from the Government. We were all impressed by the commitments expressed and plans made towards an era of renewable energy. The following three days we were at Nagiyev Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry.

We had a total of 80 presentations, 19 of which were in plenary sessions, 28 in parallel sessions and 33 in poster sessions. We were very happy to have participants from Azerbaijan in large numbers. We were also very happy to have graduate students many of which were from Kazakhstan and Türkiye. There were high level participation from neghbouring countries Uzbekistan and Georgia, the whole spectrum was quite wide from Mexico to Spain, Croatia, Bulgaria to South Africa as well as Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Based on the evaluation of session chairs and senior member of mESC-IS community, the Best Poster/Young Researchers awards were granted to Aisha Zhanaikhan (Institute of Batteries, Astana), Beyzanur Acar (Ankara University), Ibnu Syafiq Imaduddin (University of Malaya) ,Sevinj Javadova (Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry), Tuncay Erdil (Middle East Technical University), and Yerzhigit Serik (National Laboratory , Astana).

Abstracts/full papers presented at the symposium are avaliable at program link above and will soon be available at Proceedings-mESC-IS 2024. Selected papers from this symposium will be published in the following journals, namely Azerbaycan Kimya Jurnali, Chemical Problems, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, Materials Research Bulletin and Turkish Journal of Chemistry.

We would like to thank Professors Ibrahim Dinçer (International Journal of Hydrogen Energy) and Rick Ubic and Won Il Park (Materials Research Bulletin) as well as to the editors of the journals; Azerbaycan Kimya Jurnali, Chemical Problems, and Turkish Journal of Chemistry for giving us the opportunity to publish the selected contributions from this symposium in their journals.

Finally we thank all session chairs, authors and participants for their valuable contributions.
